At Pedalwise, our mission is simple: to help more people learn to ride a bike…

Pedalwise vs Bikeability
Pedalwise vs Bikeability: What’s the Difference — and When to Consider Learn-to-Ride Lessons
If you’re a parent or learner looking into cycling lessons, you may have come across both Pedalwise and Bikeability. At first glance, they might seem similar — both offer bike-related instruction and both aim to improve cycling confidence and safety. But dig a little deeper, and it becomes clear that these two services serve very different purposes.
Understanding the distinction between them can help you make an informed decision about what kind of support is right — whether you’re helping a child take their first pedal strokes or you’re an adult learning to ride for the first time.
What is Bikeability?
Bikeability is a government-backed training programme, primarily delivered through schools, that teaches children how to ride safely on the road. It’s structured in three levels:
• Level 1: Teaches basic bike handling skills in a traffic-free environment.
• Level 2: Introduces on-road cycling in quiet streets and real-world situations.
• Level 3: Covers more advanced road skills like dealing with busy traffic, complex junctions, and route planning.
Bikeability is fantastic for building road safety awareness. It’s ideal for children who can already ride independently and are ready to build their on-road skills.
But — and it’s a big but — Bikeability assumes a certain level of ability to begin with. If a child doesn’t know how to ride without stabilisers, lacks confidence, or misses their school’s Bikeability window, they’re often left out.
Where Pedalwise Comes In
This is where Pedalwise is different. We don’t assume a rider can already cycle — in fact, most of our clients can’t when they arrive. We specialise in learn-to-ride coaching for both children and adults. Our focus is on:
• Balance-first learning techniques (no stabilisers)
• Structured, small-group or 1:1 lessons
• Tailored support for anxious, neurodiverse, or late-starting learners
• Confidence building through gentle, progressive steps
We often serve as the stepping stone before Bikeability. For example, many of our child riders go on to complete Bikeability later — and do so with much more confidence and control thanks to the foundation we provide.
We also cater to adults, a group not usually served by Bikeability. Whether someone never learned to ride or hasn’t been on a bike in decades, we offer a welcoming, non-judgmental environment to rediscover the joy of cycling.
So, When Should You Consider Pedalwise?
You should consider a Pedalwise session if:
• Your child hasn’t yet mastered riding without stabilisers
• You’re an adult who never learned, or wants a fresh start
• You’ve had a negative experience trying to learn before
• You want a guaranteed, structured approach (with free return sessions if you don’t pass Level 1)
• Your child is too young, too nervous, or missed their school’s Bikeability programme
Pedalwise is also ideal for:
• Learners who benefit from extra time, encouragement, or a custom pace
• Families looking to learn together in a shared setting
• Adults preparing to use cycling for commuting, travel, or fitness
Working Together, Not Competing
We don’t see Bikeability as a competitor — we see it as a complement. In fact, we actively recommend that our riders progress to Bikeability once they’re ready to take their skills onto the road. But we also know that structured learn-to-ride lessons like ours are an essential foundation — one that shouldn’t be skipped or left to chance.
With Pedalwise, we help you start right. With Bikeability, you take the next step toward road safety and independence.
If you or your child is stuck in the gap between training wheels and traffic, Pedalwise was built for you.
